How to Draw An Octopus (Step by Step)

Gather Your Materials

Before you begin drawing, make sure you have all the necessary materials. You'll want a good sketchbook, pencils, an eraser, and optionally, colored pencils or markers for later stages.

Step 1: Outline the Body

Start by drawing a large oval shape for the octopus's body, or mantle. This will be the base of your creature. Make sure it is wider at the bottom and slightly tapered at the top, resembling a balloon.

Once you have your oval, lightly sketch a smaller oval on top, which will serve as the head. This will help guide the placement of the eyes and other features later on.

Step 2: Add the Eyes

Your octopus isn't complete without its big, expressive eyes. Draw two large circles just above the mid-point of the smaller head oval. You can position them anywhere that feels right—close together for a cuter look, or farther apart for a more serious expression.

Inside each eye, draw a smaller circle for the pupils. You can choose to add reflections by including a little white dot to make your octopus look lively.

Now comes the fun part: drawing the tentacles! An octopus typically has eight arms that are long and flowing. Start by sketching four tentacles on one side of the body and four on the other. Remember, the arms can curve and twist, so feel free to be creative!

To create the look of suction cups, you can make small circles along the bottom of each tentacle.
